World Water Day aims to draw attention to the importance of freshwater and advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. As requested at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March World Water Day by passing a resolution. The United Nations Bookshop at UN Headquarters in New York is located in the Visitors Concourse in the General Assembly Building. It serves UN staff, delegates and the general public with the latest books published by and about the United Nations, as well as responsibly sourced merchandise.

UNICEF works in more than countries and territories to reach the most disadvantaged children and adolescents – and to protect the rights of every child, everywhere. The United Nations has dedicated a new Decade for Water () to put a greater focus on the sustainable development and integrated management of water resources. World's water supply is challenged by decades of unsafe water and sanitation management and a growing demand on these resources to meet human, economic and environmental needs.
